In this lecture-style presentation, we'll learn about the hawk, falcon, and owl species that live in your neighborhood. We'll discuss local ecology, the life of a hawk in human care, and how to protect these charismatic birds.

Private Hawk Walk

Duration: 60-90 minutes

Fitness Requirement: Ability to walk over the uneven, unpaved ground of our rural hiking trails.

Join an experienced falconer for a leisurely hike through the Santa Barbara backcountry. Watch as a trained hawk flies alongside you, swooping from tree to tree as we replicate a wild hunt. We'll learn about the unique hunting behaviors of the Harris's hawk and how understanding their natural history helps us build partnerships with these birds.

We will cover the skills, equipment, training techniques, and philosophies of modern falconry. You'll discover the many different raptor species trained in falconry (from hawks to owls to eagles) and learn about the path to apprenticeship.​
